That's f*ing awesome!! Hope to play in stereo-3d some day, and in VR maybe.

(I've played SS2 in stereo a lot, and it's so damn cool!)

Thanks for all the comments everyone.  Encouragement received.

So thought I'd let you all know that I've implemented item pickup and tossing.  Each type of item has its own script so I can control whether grenades go into grenade inventory or patches to patches, or hardware pickup directly affecting the version info and adding correct hud button if its a new hardware.  I hope to have time to post a video soon where I'm throwing around grenades.  I know you're all aching for a video to be sure.

Are you doing throwing the same, where you can control the vector and velocity using the mouse?

Oh god I hope not. Throwing grenades was the one part of SS1 that I never stopped hating.

That's one reason to keep it like that!  :thumb:

What would System Shock be without killing yourself half the time you want to throw a grenade? :)

Currently, in either shoot or inventory mode, you just throw it the same...point and right click.  But I could very well have it such that you could do the old way in inventory mode and the simple ZB way in shoot mode.

Either way you have to be careful! ;)

Slight bug/feature at the moment, you can still shoot while holding an object/grenade in your hand.

Hmmm...activated my nitropak that has a 3sec fuse set, click click click, I'm shooting my gun while still holding a live grenade AHhHHh! how do I throw....BOOM!!

I'd see to keep it as it was in the original, and have it as a clickable option (on the options screen) for any newer ways of doing it.

For the authentic experience.

By default, grabbing a grenade puts you in Inventory mode where I plan to make it identical in function to the original.  You could just hit tab again and point and click to throw it, but you won't be able to throw as far.

Goofing off in the medical area...  8)

Oh, and I have grenade inventory and patch inventory now working.  You can pick up patches or grenades and add them to your inventory and it will update properly.

You're really nailing it, Josiah. Keep it up!

I'm in 2 minds on that screenshot.

On one hand the new models look good.

On the other, they clash with the older looking textures of the background.

That said, it's a static photo so I don't know how well they mix when your walking around.

Don't worry about it. One of the first mods we'll probably see knowing the masses is a hi res texture mod.
...but then again I'm not sure what good that would be. Those locker textures we see in the shot above for example, I have no idea what a high-res texture mod could do for them, but looking at Nightdive's SS remake concept art may be helpful.

I've always gone for a higher poly (not high per se mind you) and low texture res style.  To be sure I want to add more dimension to the walls, esp the medical shelves for one (in fact I already have, just haven't bothered putting it in-level), it is just a huge task to replace every wall with more detail.  I'd rather get gameplay and HUD working first.

Finish the project first.  Then worry about how pretty it looks.

Visuals shouldn't be a concern. This is going into Unity, so anyone can create high-res remastered textures for the project. I already started doing something similar using my copy of Quixel Suite 2 earlier this year and would love to continue doing it when I can experiment with how the textures and mesh replacements will look in the engine. :)

I'm amazed with the progress this remake is showing! Great work so far, Josiah. Wish I had a more experienced hand with some aspects of game design so I could assist... oh well. Looks like you're handling it well.  :)
Enjoying watching this progress!

Hey all!  Still going!  Been going slow since I'm focusing more on my thesis.  Priorities and all.

Anyways giving this gitter dev chat thing a shot:

Although I'm using git at work daily I don't understand why people think it was a good idea to use it for anything besides software development. I've seen nerds mentally converting to git and consequently try to do EVERYTHING with it. https://learnxinyminutes.com would be a typical example. https://gitter.im seems to be another. Oh god, somebody stop me before I start hating on markdown:lordy:

It's with everything. Once something becomes "cool" people will use it because it's the new cool thing now and totally awesome so you would be a fool not to use it.
It doesn't matter if it even makes sense or if there are better options at hand.

This only applies to a certain group of demographics.
Sometimes it is worth checking out the hype, but it seems these days standards have lowered considerably, and supply and demand ensures this remains the status quo.
