I started playing ss2 again, and I'm having a problem interacting with items in the menu. Instead of clicking on the items i swing my weapon, so i can't use or move any of the items. Using default binds or loading the "standard FPS" binds work, but its really annoying to play like that.

I found this thread, but I didn't understand much of it as I'm not very good with this sort of thing. So my question is this, is there a mod I can install that fixes this? And is there a mod that lets me bind the mouse wheel and mouse button 4 and 5?

I played it on the same PC about a year ago without this problem, so I don't know why this happened, I didn't use the mod manager that time though. Thanks to anybody who can help.

Simple answer: just don't rebind the mouse buttons.

I haven't, I just rebound the keyboard buttons

What exactly is the problem with reloading the default binds?

It's not a problem as in them not working. It's just that I use the arrow keys for movement, which puts the other keys a bit far away. I usually use Rshift for jump, Rctrl for duck and ins in the number pad for reload. Now space is jump x i think is duck and r is reload. And using the wasd setup makes my wrist hurt.

I've never actually been plagued by this problem myself, but as far as I know, if you load up the default binds, you should then be able to customise the controls however you like, so long as you don't rebind the mouse buttons.

Tried that, didn't work :(

Open the file User2.bnd in your SS2 folder with a good text editor (I recommend Notepad++, free download.  Note that Windows Notepad may corrupt the file, so using that is NOT recommended.)

Add the following lines to the very bottom of the file:

Code: [Select]
bind mouse1 +drag_and_drop_mode

bind mouse2 frob_object_inv

bind mouse3 toggle_mouse

Also add one extra blank line.
Save the file, and enjoy the game.

Awesome, that worked, thanks a lot. :D

For anybody else reading this, configure the keys the way you want it first, then add the lines.

I've tried editing User2.bnd and the files in the Binds folder. The bind mouse1, bind mouse2, and bind mouse3 lines were exactly as described in the middle of the file. I added them again to the end anyway, just in case. I put in the extra line and everything. I still have the attacking in use mode problem. Is there something I missed? Would reinstalling the game and just avoiding the mouse binds from now on fix it?

I've had the game since '99, and I have never had this problem until only a week ago. Maybe I never changed my mouse config until then.

That was the first place I went to. I followed all the directions. The lines in cfga/b000X were already exactly as the guide said they should be.

You should edit only user2.bnd file, not those files in binds-folder. Also you need only change line

Code: [Select]
bind mouse1 whateveryouhavehere

to this

Code: [Select]
bind mouse1 +drag_and_drop_mode

Well you can make that change in user2.bnd. The advantage of changing the files in the Binds folder is that you get a set of key binds that you can load from the game. So you can have several setups. Plus user2.bnd gets easily overwritten. Anyway that might be a matter of taste.

Saltpeter maybe you forgot to load that new key binds set from within the game?

Done and done. Loaded new binds.

Still no good. Will reinstalling the game fix my problem?

Yes, reinstalling game will fix that problem until you try change bindings again.    :weird:

You could try to delete user2.bnd and replace it from binds folder.

Tried it. That didn't work, either.

I'm probably going to format my hard drives and reinstall Windows soon, anyway. That'll get the job done. Thanks for trying.

I guess formatting your harddrive will not fix it, I went there :).

The only thing that helped me so far is to have a backup of user.bnd and user2.bnd and whenever I run into the problem I just copy them over. That works.

I also read kolyas link and tried the described methods there, and they don't work for me. The problem is a little different here: The bug appears as soon as I enter the "Options" menu (that means I don't even have to enter the controls menu), no matter if I change something or not.

Is there a way to make a mod out of user.bnd and user2.bnd? And make it recognizable with ss2modmanager?
6751117cecc9a
Sure. Just zip up the file(s).

Actually, I just reinstalled Windows, cleaned out the registry, formatted my drives, then defragged them after putting the backup stuff back on, and now SS2 does indeed work again(not just at all, but even on my desktop, on which it previously refused to work). I now know better than to mess with the mouse mapping. *goes back to playing the only game that never grows old* =D
