I recently got my game and mods running again. Reinstalled SS2 proper, DirectX, and all mods in the right amount and order.
But now I've run into a minor issue with gameplay: Sometimes and sometimes not, my cursor sticks to an item and doesn't drop it where I want it to, or it doesn't get picked up until like 3 or 5 clicks. The same thing applies to Hacking - It takes several clicks just to turn one square on.
This is on my Windows 8.1 laptop, and I don't think I can post a screenshot for it.
This isn't that much of a problem, just annoying and might bite me in the foot later on.
Note: I did some tweaking to the cam_ext file to make sure I'd get the most of my graphics, so that might have something to do with it.

I have seen that happening, but no know solution - might be some proprietary (touchpad?) software interfering or something like that. doubt it has anything to do with your cam_ext.cfg modifications.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Intel graphics chipset + maxed graphics settings = you're gonna have a bad time.

yeah, but the game would have to run at 5FPS to have the keys not register like that because of low framerates. it was a youtube LP, and the guy had the very same problem - the game was running fine, but when hacking, he had to click 3-5 times to light up a node (could hear the frustrated clicking in the background). laptops usually come loaded with proprietary oddware, and it's not uncommon that some games have a bad reaction. I usually format all that crap and load a clean msdn win image to get rid of everything, and load only the necessary drivers, that minimizes the chance of such stuff happening.

anyway, all I can say there is a reason why most games come with a "laptops/integrated graphics not supported" warning - it works? well, good for you. it doesn't? bummer, we told 'ya.

An HD3000 has absolutely zero issues running this game at "max settings", but okay.  :happyjoy:

Not my fault that you assume SS2 is even remotely system intensive <3

depends - generally, you should be ok as long as you keep the resolution reasonable, and don't enable the eyecandy. crank up the resolution, enable hdr/fsaa, and you can have a radeon hd 6950 struggling, as I've found out some time ago. "it's an old game, so it should work ok on today's (budget) computers" is a nice example of flawed reasoning.

intel also spices things up by having really bad drivers. but hey, it's cheap, free gpu with each cpu - you can't complain if free stuff doesn't work properly, now can you.
Interface Lag Solution
6741438435aca
My friend had the same issue with interface lag on Win8.1. Sometimes and sometimes not, just like you described it. He was able to fix it by running the game in compatibility mode for an older version of windows.
6741438435c40
New Dark takes care of system compatibility issues. Introducing windows compatibility layer will cause more problems than it solves. But since we know nothing about your friend's build it's a moot point. It may have worked for him but it's still a bad tip.

My friends "build"? Computer specs? Windows and drivers versions? Game version and mods?
You could be more specific too.

ZylonBane responds with a facepalm because OP is playing on a laptop and because he changed settings in his cam_ext .cfg? My suggestions are hardly the least helpful.

I figured as the issue was exactly as OP described it, he or someone else with the same issue could try it and see if it solved it for them.

Now enough about defending my post / taking a jab at you guys.

I don't know the full details about my friends computer, but I can say he is also running on Windows 8.1, has an Nvidia GPU, and his game was set up with SS2Tool 6.0.0.5, and some mods found on this site, the same ones as I used, but the issue was not present on my end.

While troubleshooting, we tried various changes to cam_ext.cfg as well, adjusting framerate cap, changing ui scale mode, vsync... but it did not solve the issue. Then we saw this thread, and seeing as someone else had the same problem in windows 8.1, we figured might as well try with compatibility mode, I don't know which version he tried compatibility mode with, but it solved the issue for him.

I'm not surprised that people have problems with Windows 8.x. Micro$oft made too many changes to GUI and its APIs, starting with removal of Start-button in 8.0.

Start button removed?
Then what the hell have i been clicking.

I had this exact same problem. I believe I fixed it by reducing the anti-aliasing settings in cam_ext.cfg.

Ahh, I mean Start menu.
6741438436739
ahh ok.
Yeah that is a loss.
But they added the right click menu for power users "not sure if this was there pre win 8.0 .. 8.1
And there are programs that emulate the old start menu.

I'm having this problem again and reducing anti-aliasing setting hasn't helped. Anyone got any other ideas?

What are your system specifications?

6741438436b1dhemebond

6741438436b7c
i7, 16GB RAM, Nvidia GTX980ti, Ubuntu 14.04, Wine 1.7.
6741438436c9f
Well, I don't know much about Wine, but for games you should always check WineHQ for possible fixes. Check out the comments.

I'd try to play around with cam_ext.cfg and wine settings (framecap, synchronization, windowed etc).

I reset the game using SS2Tool-v6.1.0.7.exe (fantastic tool btw) and it's working fine. I've saved those configs. I'm now going to go through and enable the mods I had, then will modify the cam files.

Running under Wine 1.7 with "Emulate a virtual desktop" enabled with size 2560x1440. Made the following changes to cam_ext.cfg and it still works fine:
Code: [Select]
;single_display_mode 2
single_display_mode 3
d3d_disp_scaled_2d_overlay 800 600
d3d_disp_force_filter_scale2d
bloom_range 2
d3d_disp_enable_atoc 2
default_alphatest_ref 1
Enabled these mods and it still works fine:
  • obj_fixes_v08
  • accfam_18
  • vurt's ss2 flora overhaul 1.0e
  • vurt's hi-res space v1.1
  • SHTUP-ND_beta0
  • secmod_3.1
