In a discussion in Rec there was an idea punted about about making the weapon system make more sense. Have it Melee, Pistols, Rifles, and Heavy weapons.


So it'd be
Melee:
Wrench
Laser Rapier
Crystal Shard

Pistol:
Pistol
Energy Pistol
Not sure what would go here, that one annalid gun that has the funky curved upper and lower bits?

Rifle:
Shotgun
Assault Rifle.
EMP Rifle

Heavy:
Stasis field generator
Grenade Launcher
That one heavy thing with regular/DEATH settings.
Worm Launcher (the one annalid weapon that's more straight and has the end with the open maw thing.)

Is that even doable? If not then eh. If it is then the details can be hashed out, but this seems far more sensical than the default since it allow s someone specializing in an area to have situationally appropriate weapons instead of getting potentially gimped.

I'm sure it's doable. What would need to be done though is to change the names of the weapons skills so that they are called Pistol, Melee, Rifle etc. and not Standard, Energy, Exotic and such.

I'll try and make a gamesys with this sort of thing. But I remember Zylonbane's suggestion changing some of the weapon properties, like the Viral Proliferator not having the hold mouse to delay shot release and the EMP rifle doing some incendiary damage at overdrive mode. That will take time to implement.

Ok, here's an experimental gamesys which ties pistols to the Pistol skill, rifles to the Rifle skill, and such. Keep in mind that I didn't test it thoroughly and there are likely to be bugs and errors.

Found one error already, weapons with ammunition can't be unloaded. I would like to know if there is any way of fixing this.

I really like this one! Balancing change that also makes perfect sense for a gun like that.

It seems to be only for the pistol, I can still unload ammo from the shotgun. What gives?

Also I weakened the laser rapier too much and the statistic requirement for using the shotgun was set too high, these are fixed in the new version of the file here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3ktsS6vDLwVUkM5UC04czNHX2s/view?usp=sharing

Found another bug. The EMP rifle doesn't get recharged by batteries or recharge stations.

I figured out the reason why. The weapon archetype overrides the properties of the weapon and disables some functions. So for example putting the pistol in an Energy weapons class doesn't allow it to be reloaded or unloaded, and putting energy weapons into a Conventional weapons class doesn't let it be recharged by batteries or recharge stations. This is going to be so annoying.

Got the Pistol and Laser Pistol to behave by making a subclass with the property Energy and placing the Laser Pistol there, while making the Pistol class Conventional property. The EMP Rifle still isn't working properly though, will need to see about it.

Success! I copied over the properties for the Energy Weapon class for the subclass of Rifles, and now the EMP rifle works properly.

My suggestion would be the Stasis field generator. Shrink it down a little and call it a one handed weapon, and it would round out the pistol category. Plus it is a stunner, so it fits in with the lower power weapons.

Rifle:
Shotgun
Assault Rifle.

The Fusion Cannon is the one with regular/DEATH settings. And, I think you are getting the Viral Proliferator and the Worm Launcher mixed up. The WL is the "annalid gun that has the funky curved upper and lower bits" and the VP is "the one annalid weapon that's more straight and has the end with the open maw thing".

 The VP would probably work better in the Long Guns (Rifles), with the WL in the Heavy weapons.
