Having to go to fixed locations to do your research does force you to either spend a lot of time backtracking to do research, or for the levels to have enough research rooms scattered around that there's always one nearby.

The effect of that depends on how much research there is to do in the game and how important it is.

Things that can only be done in fixed locations needs to be used in moderation; Bioshock shows exactly what happens if you overuse it.

Keep it a 50/50 mix of RPG and FPS. And keep the inventory Tetris.

Grid inventory with unlimited slots and an encumbrance limit is a much better way to go, as seen in games like STALKER, The Witcher, Divinity: Original Sin, Neverwinter Nights, etc., etc.

It has the advantages of a grid inventory (graphical representations that you can see at a glance, being able to arrange items in two-dimensional space) combined with the advantages of a limited inventory (which you want in a survival horror game), but without the unneeded effort of manually sorting the inventory, or such oddities as a stack of one thousand bullets taking up the same space as a single psi hypo.

Back to the research thing. It is completely unrealistic. All the chemicals are some kind of metal. Two of them aren't even stable so (currently) it's impossible to store them in any way. But given from a gameplay perspective it's good.
Why you are making more damage is in the description of the researched organ, so I see no problem there.

If you start arguing about that so much you could also say the same stuff about repair. It does cost some nanites. So you always have some material compiler with you that turns money(?) into the parts needed to fix your guns and stuff? Yeah, sure. That's even more bullshit than the research.

People enjoy having to manually arrange the inventory, as long as it is not tedious.

Probably crazy idea for inventory management that I've had in my mind for a while.
Your character has some slots for "bags". Bags can be backpacks, pockets, weapon holsters, etc.
Every bag has its own weight limit, inventory tetris grid and "retrieval speed".

You can put a lot of stuff in your backpack, but retrieving it takes more time.
You can only put a small pistol in your pocket, but retrieving it is almost instantaneous.

Plenty of games use the infinite-weighted-grid system without pausing, too.  Divinity: Original Sin, for example (though its combat is turn-based, so it's slightly different.)

They don't have to be huge, they can just use scrollbars.  The trick is to make the standard size (without scrolling) roughly big enough to hold the usual number of items a player can carry, so that scrolling isn't too frequent.

Agreed. What I meant by "the full extent of use mode" though was our cursor not only interacting with the inventory, but also with the game world, and also from our inventory to the world and vice-versa. With a massive UI window this wouldn't be viable. And yeah, real time inventory/UI is also ideal for this.
Making changes to SS2's design formula will need to be as logical as they were from SS1 - SS2.

You won't believe how much of design components of great games are said to be non-balanced. By people who just need not the Work but soft and warm and handy gameplay where every option leads no choice to victory. Realism, with its right ways and lame ways - no, who needs this.

I agree with NV on the inventory, Stalker has a huge inventory mostly because the items are bigger, you can see the guns and armors are three times as big as the ones in SS2 for visibility, the display size has nothing to do with the system itself, the item auto-sorting is really good too.

I like the research labs idea a lot, in fact I was thinking of something similar myself at some point, the idea is to remove the clutter of chemicals in your inventory (even hardcore SS2 fans mention this one) while still keeping the idea of a place like the Chemical Storage in the world where you need to go to do research, except it's a lab with all the required equipment this time.
This also adds the possibility of doing stuff like modifying the environment to create shortcuts to labs and make them more accessible to remove tedium.
The "complexity void" created by missing chemicals can be filled by having multiple research projects for each creature. (as long as you keep them from being as hare-brained as Bioshock's: http://bioshock.wikia.com/wiki/Research_Rewards#Thuggish_Splicer_2)

Yeah, so the survey page asks you about your favorite platform and what you think about VR, probably a good idea to complete it.
Voted PC and 1/10 on VR, honestly do not want them to stretch themselves any thinner with console versions or random tech, "deliver a good PC game" is all I need

I just hope it's kept as a FPS view game, and not that on a Oculus Rift. Well if they want to make a Oculus port then by all means that's fine, but aslong as it's not the main port of it.

... you expect developers to make your life easier... but you don't make theirs easier.

i have learned there are 2 types of inventories.. those that need effort and those that are idiot proof... system shock was like starwars when lucas was hardly respected as a director.... all that LG needed was lucas in that era not EA before they forgot what games are.

OtherSide Entertainment, the development studio behind the upcoming fantasy RPG Underworld Ascendant, is excited to officially announce development on System Shock 3, the sequel to the landmark System Shock series.

Last week, OtherSide posted a teaser website (www.othersidetease.com ) with cryptic lettering hinting at a new game. Internet hackers quickly cracked the site, prematurely revealing the game’s title. As part of the fun, series’ AI antagonist SHODAN appeared to mock the hackers with new taunts each day.

On the updated teaser site today, fans can hear popular voice actress Terri Brosius (System Shock 1 & 2, Dishonored) reprise her role as the voice of SHODAN and see an early peek at the evolving ‘next generation’ look of the character by artist Robb Waters.

Key members of the original System Shock and System Shock 2 teams will be part of the sequel. This includes Paul Neurath, who oversaw the original series’ development; Nate Wells, a senior artist on System Shock 2; and Waters, the lead concept artist of both original games.

The path to bring the System Shock franchise forward was long and winding. Several years back, OtherSide secured the exclusive IP rights to all future versions of the franchise. Only recently, through partnership with Night Dive Studios, who owns the System Shock trademark, did OtherSide get the rights to use the System Shock name for the sequel.
