The question that is making me excited about this game is, will NightDive have enough money, and enough assets and inhouse tools from this remake to consider giving the same treatment to SS2? I think it would be a minor jump in art direction, and mostly in the level design. Kind of makes we wish for the same treatment for Thief games (which's levels could be redesigned very liberally, as long as they kept them all - but that's a pipedream for a developer with the rights)

  :lordy: :lordy: :lordy:

The first thing i read from systemshock.com: Coming soon to kickstarter
I guess they have enough money to get a fair bit of development done, but they still need kickstarter money for other purposes? I don't know, i honestly don't think they really need to resort to crowdfunding just yet.

Could be they have enough to get a bare bones game, but want kickstarter money to do final polish along with gauging interest.

Well, consider that they have only focused on releasing old titles with compatibility fixes thus far. They probably have some hiring to do and investors to attract. What they have shown us is a demo of what they are capable of.

Very excited for the Remaster. I'm really not picky - I'm just amazed this is happening at all!

On that note, though, I definitely agree with the sentiments about glossiness and the overly blocky level architecture.

On the other hand, it was a great thrill to finally understand what those 2D textures actually represented, lol. I love what they've done with the pipes texture in the maintenance section of the med deck.

Kickstarter hasn't been solely for getting funding for a project for quite some time. Even big companies use it as cheap promotion because it will practically guarantee one months of regular coverage by gaming sites, every time an update is released or a stretch goal is unlocked.

And now the little guys that use it for legitimate reasons/the purpose it was made get overlooked in favor of the fanfare of nostalgic remakes backed by corporate funding. Whether or not Underworld Ascendant is one of this kind we don't know as they are silent on the matter of finances, but there's always the possibility they are backed by EA. I guess if so then that was the price of getting the Underworld license from them.

Speculation running high?
Re: Pre-Alpha SS1 Remake Video Footage

In the case of UA, yes. But it is well known others have used corporate funding/contracts alongside their Kickstarters.
I consider Otherside "little guys" anyway. Or middleweight rather. Some of the best in game design though of course, and that's what truly matters.

I thought SS1 remake was made inhouse by Night Dive Studios (or same team that made Spirits of Xanadu?). I would like to know facts If someone knows.
So my understanding is OtherSide entertainment has nothing to do with this remastered edition.
And about the money, I believe Night Dive Studios has enough money to make the remake without kickstarters or other campaigns.
Cherno is right about using kickstarter as and advertisement is possibility, but it seems they have done well with press releases (as they were featured on every major game site). Early access (sucks) is more probable way to fund the "optional" polishing phase (in other words buy more time).

Also the rights situation is still a bit unclear to me. Paul Neurath said in one interview that He procured the rights to System Shock (and not Night Dive Studios)...
So who really owns what?

Trademark is owned by Night Dive Studios.
So I believe He just ment that He had made deal with Night Dive Studios.

Outside entertainment

Be His game.

No seriously, stop picking on those with imperfect English skills. There's almost always a legitimate reason for it such as English not being their first language, or a terrible upbringing with no role models to instill the importance of learning into them.
So what's your excuse for being an intolerant, insufferable douchebag anyway?

Also, how many spoken languages do you know  fluently (spoken so programming languages do not count)? If you only know English you have no place to pick on grammar mistakes of those that are multilingual.

Capitalization and the correct use of it is defined by the rules of English grammar.

Kickstarter is a company, and a company's goal is to make money. Hence, KS, no matter what they write in their fancy corporate speech bubbles about helping the little guys, is there to make money. That's the legitimate reason and the purpose it was made. If they see that allowing big companies on their platform diminishes the returns from the smaller projects in a way that affects their bottom line, they might change something, but as long as those big projects rake in millions of dollars, I wouldn't count on it.

Careful with the "companies are there to make money by any means possible & above all else" line. In an ideal world ethics and more would always factor strongly into business proceedings.

Also, tell that line to Looking Glass.

Looking Glass didn't make (enough) money and look what happened to them.

In an ideal world the exceptional wouldn't be ignored in favor of something less ambitious or well executed either. Happens all the time, even on a small scale, such as in the modding world.

Capitalization is defined by orthography, not grammar. Orthography is a prescriptive set of rules about "correct" writing, as taught in school. Spelling is a subset of orthography that applies here. Grammar on the other hand describes how sentences, phrases and words are structured in common use.
The following sentence is grammatically correct but orthographically wrong: "U liek ma nu pants?"  This sentence is grammatically correct but semantically wrong: "The emptiness painted freedom with house."
Although ZB tends to be strongly on the prescriptive side and quite possibly even has a normative idea of grammar, he knows the difference between grammar and orthography. If I were to clean up his offtopic bullshit as Gawain suggests, what would I do with others? It's an inextricable but entertaining mess.
