This game is much more than a SHMUP, it's a supernova of a strategy game. You heard me right.

In a nutshell: The game gets interesting when the black holes pop up. Those feed on your enemies but soon explode if you don't keep their size in check by shooting at them. Destroy a black hole that's eaten lots of enemies to gain an immense points boost and powerups.

The control setup is pretty important as you soon will notice. I use the "Hybrid" setting, where you can shoot in different directions via keys and navigate with the mouse. Also turn off autofire. In some situations it's better not to shoot.

Stuart Campbell of Sensible Software fame (Cannon Fodder, Sensible Soccer) wrote a great review/guide for this game.
Also see the other games by Grid Wars author Mark Incitti.

Similar but a bit more sophisticated, or so I read, I never played Geometry wars.

Quote by Stuart Campbell:
while GW2 is undeniably closely related to GW:RE, it's the ways in which it's different that make it remarkable. Remarkable, in fact, to the extent that it's possibly the single most perfect piece of pure videogame design that this reporter has seen in the last decade.

A faithful clone of Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (Xbox360) can be found here.
It is less visually impressive and limited in control options compared to Grid Wars 2 though.
