And yet some of us like pleasing the grognards.  Not that I would go that far.

So, apparently System Shock 1 has some hidden controls:
===================================================

Just found this out by accident...if you press ALT+4 it enables the lantern at full brightness, press ALT+4 again and it dials it down to mid level, then again and it dials the lantern down to the lowest setting, then again and it turns it off.

Other cool hidden controls:
ALT+5: Shields full power (or last setting), again shields low power, again then off
ALT+F7: Displays message: "CTBM vF1.6C"  I'm not sure what the first part is but the last part is the game version.
ALT+F8: Displays ?gametime? followed by current resolution: "6:22.38:1024x 768"
ALT+[: cycle left through center MFD tabs.
ALT+]: cycle right through center MFD tabs.
ALT+LEFTARROW: strafe left.
ALT+RIGHTARROW: strafe right.
ALT+UPARROW: sprint forward.
ALT+Numpad8: sprint forward.  (Incidentally...the numpad 'cross'(4,6,8,2) and arrow keys can control forward, back, turnleft, and turnright)
Numpad7: sprint while turning left (what the heck!)
Numpad9: sprint while turning right (egad!!)
CTRL+LEFTARROW: lean left
CTRL+RIGHTARROW: lean right
CTRL+UPARROW: look up
CTRL+DOWNARROW: look down
CTRL+Numpad4: lean left
CTRL+Numpad6: lean right
SHIFT+P: pause
?: Show the non hidden keyboard commands. (note requires shift to type actual ?)

Hoo!  Wierd.

Wait, shock has native straif keys?

...Dumb question. Does the enhanced edition allow you to rebind those to things that are more sensical?

Ya, z and c are strafe.

Incidentally, the reason I stumbled upon the ALT key combo (and went down the rabbit hole of the others) was because, whilst recreating certain flickering lights on the engineering level, I was moving around to get a better view of some walls when the flickering stopped.  I had to reload the game to get the lights to flicker again.  Thinking I had stumbled upon a leftover developer cheat to disable lights flickering, I set out to PRESS ALL THE KEYS!!!

And you can re-bind those keys in Enhanced edition... Now i feel sheepish for not picking it up when i had money (I rarely  have money I feel comfortable enough to spend.)

Still haven't figured out how I stopped lights flickering.  Oh well.  Mustve been a bug.  Inevitible I suppose since the game was running for about 3 weeks straight whilst I ran from level to level looking at things.  Surprisingly no memory leaks, it was a well made gem back in them thar days.  Kudos to the developers.

...that or its the combo of SHIFT+S+R+SPACE+......ahg there has to be a cheat in here somewhere.

Well hello everyone .. Just wanted to say that going prone is a must in a shock game considering the "immersive" sim and legacy as well. Player could very well crawl under stuff and hide behind obstacles and scout or shoot from behind cover. And on top of that if the remake will enhance the original, if for instance it will have better physics system and so on, then there could be some new opportunities for said movement feature - especially at higher difficulties. Regarding the posture UI: moist likely it could be done away with or in a more smooth fashion - like a semi-transparent pop-up diplay, after all the whole of UI was a product of the times. Besides posture and position could be controlled with mouse wheel+m-button and/or keyboard modifier key or something similar -> minimum complexity and maximum expressivity/gameplay. Looking aroud would be fun as well if done properly, after all you can roll on the ground as well, would be fun on a SS/immersive sim game  XD

Apparently you don't consider SS2 to be a Shock game then.

We have hardcore shockers on the team that definitely want prone to go in, so it likely will. That said, there is no blocking gameplay reason that I'm aware of that absolutely requires it.

There are a few vents in the original maps that, for no particular reason, require prone to get through. I, for one, would be happy to see them modified to only require crouching.

Also, if prone is to go in, I think it would benefit from a more realistic movement penalty (vs the no penalty at all it has in the original game).

as long as prone is not an interactive quicktime event at places where it's required, I'm good (either way).

might not be the correct phrase - pop a press X to crawl over the screen and auto drag the player through the tight spot once he hits the key, and spit him out on the other side. yuck.

Quicktime event. Yeah no. Especially since one of the prone-passageways is like a hundred feet long.

Must. Not. post a smart ass comment aimed at ZylonBane rubbing it in.

In all seriousness, this spells something very favorable for Shock. That the devs care about a feature that is ultimately minor in the grand scheme and could be removed for the sake of accessibility without the whole fanbase getting up in arms shows they care. The game's in good hands and it will be one of few remakes that isn't a soulless cash grab, manipulation of the fans and typical shitting on art. After this, we'll owe NightDive a beer and a handshake each. Keep up the good work fellas!

Hey, it's cool. Maybe there is, maybe there isn't, or maybe there is but it just wouldn't faze you. I'll see you in the next thread where we relentlessly disagree over some minor game mechanic that few give a fuck about, and I'll probably enjoy it.

I found the SS1 controls unbearable. There's nothing immersive or fun about controlling a human avatar like it's a bipedal tank. "retract legs. extend legs. forward acceleration!"

I've been watching Doom 4 streams and the movement is really nice and fluid; and the game is fking gorgeous.

The game should interpret the players intent and manoeuvre the avatar accordingly. If I crouch-walk to the opening of a vent or low table the game should make the avatar behave accordingly.

In terms of feel (of movement/motions), I definitely wish for more FP-animations for the avatar. I think Far Cry 2 made a very good effort in that regard. Also applying some intertia and other real world physics (tweaked for comfort) is desirable, imo. Not too much head bobbing though as that tends to cause motion sickness for many people - a slider for adjustment does wonders though. Weightless floating and switches to 3rd-person (I'm not specifically talking about SS only) for certain actions should be a thing of the past (or shooters that aim for a classic feel).

I usually would say the same, but I guess I got too used to the classic ontrols of System Shock. Once you get properly used to them, they feel surprisingly natural. I really noticed this the first time i played System Shock enhanced. It just works somehow. I basically went completely nuts after 30 seconds of the new controls, and swiftly changed the controls to classic, even though i would've been completely fine with the new controls if it was any other game. Old habits die hard, I guess.

Once you get properly used to any other FPS from the last ten years, they feel excruciatingly awkward.
