Ask yourself this:  If this forum wasn't really active in the modding sense and today ND re-released SS2 with what we now know as SHTUP, SHMUP, [the better parts of] Rebirth, NewDark and SCP, would you buy it?

If this was under Night Dive, I'd be commending them. SS2 modded up, compared to vanilla is a night and day difference. FAR better with mods attached. So if this had been all bundled together and called "System Shock 2 Enhanced Edition", I'd be all over that, if we'd not already had these things for free. Use of rebirth is debatable, but the rest are essential imo.

Kinda like vanilla Skyrim (or Oblivion) vs modded up. Far better with mods.

I regularly come back to System Shock 1 and 2 with my friends, and we have never used any of the mods, besides when fan missions required them to be played. With all due respect to the diligent modders on the forum, I would prefer to buy the original games instead.

It's fine to want to play the original of something.  I myself keep saying that about SS1 because there's a "feel" to it that belongs to the early 90s and bringing it to 2016 would (probably) cause a loss in translation, even if unintentional.  SS2 however doesn't suffer this symptom and, in theory, if you can make something look better, sound better and work better (and by better I mean in the most technical way possible), without changing anything else about the game why wouldn't you want that?  It would be no different than if the game had never been made when it was but instead you throw the developers in a time machine and transport them 20 yrs into the future to make it today.

Yeah rebirth is a bit of a weird one.  I only mentioned it because there's no direct replacement for the AI models that is true enough to the originals and I can't imagine playing an enhanced SS2 with the original polygonal models.

Fair enough, and I totally get why most people go with rebirth.

For me, I prefer the original models over the majority of it. Where as I see NewDark + SHTUP + SCP as the absolute essentials.

New Kickstarter update for the reboot went out today.

I liked this little bit of new concept art.

Nothing else of major interest in the update.

They also proclaim to aim for a Q2/2018 release, I'm fairly sure that wasn't stated before.

Well, if you put it that way, then yes, you're right.

They also talk about moving onto the vertical slices or something. Not sure what their on about there.

As before, I very much like the aesthetic they are using for this game, reinforced by this picture.  I don't like the art direction on certain specific details like certain AI but for the most part, the art is fantastic.  However they still refuse to tone down the bloom.  I feel like I'm swimming in molten Skittles.

Seems like the released pre-alpha wasn't quite what they wanted.

Finally some colors. It's look more authentic and futuristic than screens from demo...

My only issue, is that if they already had the healing beds which healed 100% of injuries, then what need would they have for a surgeon?

Sometimes I think we're clairvoyant.  I wrote a paragraph about this and decided not to post it but that's exactly what I thought, although the enemy itself is quite good IMO.  Might have been nice in SS1 from the beginning if it had been woven in.

complete reliance on machines is not a good idea, so keeping a few real surgeons around would not be surprising.

Hey may not have been a real surgeon before he became a cyborg surgeon.

It could also be that the healing machine just can't do everything. So for everything else there is the surgeon.
