Rewatching Nightdive's cyberspace video, what's actually making my brain hurt is the grid being broken up at the junctions rather than the added texture noise. It destroys the cohesion of the grid, which ought to be the most basic and easily read structure and turns it into more noise.
I don't like how obscured the rest of the level is either even though they did solve the issue of getting mixed up by the transparency but I'm sure there was a better way.

By the way, any Dystopia veterans here? That mod always had a standout cyberspace to me. In fact the cyberpunk mechanics were superb throughout.

At first I laughed about the fanfic quality story of this video. It doesn't seem very professional, eh?
Then I remembered the crap Ken Levine pulled with those pseudo-mysterious, gamified PR-websites that popped up like mushrooms before every Bioshock release. There was a lot of publisher money behind that and it was clearly a professionally designed campaign to lure the kids in.
This instead feels personal, like something Looking Glass may have done if they had the chance back then. Taking a silly idea and having fun with it, not taking yourself too seriously. I like that.

"We're using non-filtered MIP-mapped textures for level geo and objects. This helps maintain a solid retro feel with the original game and maintain the nostalgia you remember from the original game."

"For horror games like the Shock series, everything in the game should lend itself toward immersing the player in the experience."

Literally back-to-back. How are we supposed to get immersed in the experience when it's so dead set on constantly reminding us "Hey, this used to be a DOS game with bad graphics!". Yo, Night Dive, by presenting your SS1 remake as a nostalgia piece, you're tacitly admitting that you don't think it can stand on its own anymore as a legitimate game experience.

I really enjoyed this. Has a "Kung Fury" feel to it. Good to see NDS not taking themselves too seriously.

I think it's charming in that cheesy 90ies 90s cable TV way, which is certainly what they were going for.

I had really hoped they were going to fix that nonsensical half-glove the Hacker wears, but it appears they're doubling down on it instead.

Seriously, what's the point of wearing a glove that only protects half your fingers?!? I feel uncomfortable just looking at it.

The point is that it's cool™

YES! Was one of the best things ever to come out of Koalaland. The mod is technically still alive (they release content for it occasionally and have gameplay events), so it might be time to crack out the old Source SDK Base 2006

So people on the Nightdive discord were talking about how the VFX guy who was working on the gore system has decided to leave the team. I wonder how that will impact development going forward.

Yes, the rumor is he left due to workplace bullying.

Workplace bullying? Hope that's not true. That shits not ok anywhere.
68293e100241a
True but does Nightdive Studios even have a shared workplace apart from the internet and the odd meeting in Kick's living room? I thought they were all working from home offices.
68293e10026b7
You don't need to physically be in the same room with other people to harm them, though.

Certainly not and cyber bullying is very real but typically that's using the perceived anonymity of the internet, whereas workplace bullying happens mostly in personal encounters up close with the bullies trying to not leave any hard evidence that could incriminate them when the victim tries to report them. Of course it's possible to bully colleagues online but it's an odd combination, especially between colleagues who almost never met each other in person. Bullying has a lot to do with group dynamics, which I would assume is different for Nightdives' work model. But what do we know? It's just a rumour.

We’d also like to announce that anyone who pre-orders System Shock remake will receive System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition for free and ALL Kickstarter/Backerkit backers who backed at the $30 level or higher will also be receiving SS2:EE for free. It’s our intention to release both System Shock remake and SS2:EE around the same time. SS2:EE has evolved into more than what we were intending. This will be a complete source port to our KEX engine. All the character and weapons models are being remade, and we’ve received permission from the Shock community to include many of the mods that have become standard for many Shock 2 veterans.
that probably means those who only own SS2 will most likely have cough up a few bucks.

but I don't mind seeing they are taking the engine porting part seriously.

Hopper's looking good, though a bit awkward in it's movement. Grenade launcher also looking good.

Mantis Assassin is a new thing in how it works. Just runs at the player to smash em up.

Good to see that grenades are now a proper weapon instead of the weird UI outlier that they were in the original.

Whoever designed that "assassin" robot, on the other hand, has a confused notion of what an assassin is. Looks more like a straight up assault bot.

They probably should have just named it a "Mantis Cyborg".

I still don’t get why in immersive sims, that the weapons have to take up around 20% of the screen, blocking the view of the world. That chunky and obtrusive feeling, is one of the worst things that got passed along from Bioshock.

Okay that's some fresh crazy I've never heard before. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of bog-standard FPSs with screen-filling weapons.

Sure is, I just don’t think you get my point, or at least you aren’t trying to.
