I doubt the release is close - no SS2EE betas yet, and there is no chance of EE having a non-botched release unless it's tested thoroughly, remember, they are bridging KEX and ND mods, that is not an easy task.

public/semi public betas have been mentioned, so my guess is that once they exist, we will be able to check them out. which is essential imho, because this will have to be tested to death if they want the first KEX release to play SCP b5 with all the eyecandy attached without everything crashing and burning.

yes, but the current plan is still to ship both at the same time, afaik. so SSR being ready would imply SS2EE being ready, and we know SS2EE is not ready, hence, SSR is not ready. probably.

Looks like all the stupid shit (overly dark levels, tiny fonts, oversized compass, charging stations that shoot sparks everywhere, @#$%ing cyberspace texturing, pixelated textures, etc.) is still in there.
