though I think that as long as SSR is even mildly successful, SS2R is actually quite likely, because why not.

Well SS1 had its issues fixed with EE so you could argue it didn’t need one either and yeah I don’t think this remake will do well, maybe decent but idk. NDS is ignoring anyone that has issues for some reason and idk if their “fans” will be enough.

Like why can’t NDS explain why some things are cut, why some things are redesigned, why there is no music, etc or better yet not change those things?

I assume a SS2 remake would mainly be an HD upgrade but given how much from SS1 they changed who knows what they would do with SS2

Yeah for as much of the game as they show they are surprisingly secretive as to the reasons and only listen to those who have no issues at all.

I asked Stephen and this is what I got

How and Why does ZB actually like the ambiance? I can’t stand it

I suppose, but will it take another 8 years?

SS has always been kinda niche so idk how well SSR will even do.

If one defines SS1's issues as "horribly dated controls, movement, UI, and graphics", then no, EE didn't fix them. EE improved the controls, but that's about it.

That's called a remaster, and SS2 Enhanced Edition, with the included community mods and Night Dive's upgraded AI and weapon models, is pretty close to being that. A remake would involve rebuilding everything from scratch in a modern engine.

Personally, controls and resolution were the only issues I have with SS classic and EE having mouselook and high res options fixes my only issues with the game personally

Well a remake and remaster are not the same, a remake can be 1:1 or very different and a remaster is just an enhanced port.

Also something I noticed, does anyone else think that SHODAN in the remake sounds different?

Like in SS1, SS2, and the trailers for SS3 she sounds pretty consistent but in the remake something is different about her voice, idk what it is but I don't like it as much.

Like it is still good but it feels like something is off

Well I dunno. I think thats just Terri getting older. If you compare SS1 to SS2 there are some differences in how she speaks her bits.

Possibly, and could be cause I’m used to the original but I think she sounded fine in SS3 trailers and for the Remake it’s still good but I don’t like it as much as there’s something about it that I don’t like as much.

I mean yeah but SS1 and SS2 I think sounded more similar than different

Edit: something else on the remake, I hate the people that use the excuse for the changes and say “well SS1 was a horror game”

No it wasn’t, it had bad ass music, it is bright and colorful at many points, you didn’t run low on resources really, and you were a hacker fighting robots, mutants, and cyborgs, with a fully equipped arsenal.

And the horrors and loneliness present (when they were) were enhanced by the music not the other way around

Yes it had horror elements but it never was a full horror game in the traditional sense

And SS1 has some darker areas so the idea that “they didn’t have the tech” is false too.

It’s like saying doom was a horror game (back when Doom 3 was coming out) cause it wasn’t either 

Sorry for the rant, I just say something that really annoyed me and needed to vent a little.

Have Night Dive ever made an original game, not a remaster or a remake? Personally, I would like for NDS to release SSR, then their SS2 remaster, because I'd love to be able to play SS1 and 2 on console (my preferred gaming platform), whereas on the PC,  I'm happy enough with SS1 EE and the current SS2 + SCP.

After SSR and SS2R are released, then I'd love for them to make a new immersive sim, be it System Shock 3, or a similar game but with a new I. P. (if they can't get the rights to make System Shock 3), as the genre is sadly very sparse, but then, even if NDS did create and release a really good immersive sim, then I'd hate to think of the time-frame necessary, give how long SSR, a comparatively simple repaint and tweaking of an existing game with source code, is taking.

I wish the fantastic Prey (2017) had received a sequel.

System Shock 3 done by them could be interesting or an original IP even

I don't mind those myself, tho I get why they aren't everyone's cup of tea.

Ideally there would be a way to turn them on or off, but myself I don't mind the retro-look it sort of goes for.

Plus there are bigger issues with the game imo

Every time this thread has a new post, I immediately think that someone has posted that there is a new update from Night Dive Studios.

A moment later, I remember how vastly unlikely that it is nowadays.

Do we know why NDS have abandoned the (already sporadic) updates?

This isn't related to SSR specifically, but am I the only who can't get used to how twitchy viewmodel animations tend to look in first-person 3D games nowadays? I suppose I'm just a little bit out of touch, as I haven't been playing a lot of modern games lately. Still, I'm kinda curious...

That is the big mystery/million dollar question. If you look back to how things were after the project was rebooted, for a good while everything was laid out with footage (in Twitch streams) of development of the blocking out of levels, music and sound development, work on models and textures etc. But only in the Twitch streams, not in the KS updates.

Then radio silence for a long, long time. Then sporadic updates with little to no detail beyond screenshots. It's like 1 person was heading up things at the beginning (of the rebooted version) with a completely open approach, and then someone else took over who wanted more mystery and surprise (as those were mentioned a few times on Discord, after being asked about the lack of detail in KS updates). But in the end who knows, and we very well likely will never know of the why.

I for one would not back a game of theirs on KS or another project backing service again, as I don't see the point. If your not going to be told anything, then your essentially being treated more as a customer (or purchaser) than of a backer/investor. I say this, as if you look at how games companies have always done when asked of games their developing, maybe they allow a member of the press in to take some photos and give a few details, and that's it. They never say specifically where things are at in the overall process, as that may scare off potential customers, or lead to a frenzy if it's close to done.

I think this describes many of the odd design choices that have been mentioned so far out so far pretty well...including the one you've just pointed out.

That just brakes my brain. Why in the world would he have a tri-op tattoo? He's supposed to be sticking it to the mega corps. Not being a huge fan of them.

I am usually very accepting of the new style but this tattoo his very strange. Either they have written a deeper backstory than expected for the hacker (hence the id number?), or it's all super shallow and they put it in because it looked cool.

Aside from anything else, that tattoo is very badly placed/positioned. Only the hacker himself can see it as the design is properly  meant to be seen (with the text underneath the hexagon). To any other person, that tattoo will generally look like it's on it's side (i.e. when the hacker's arm is hanging vertically down his side, which in the real world it would be for most of the time, then the text of the tattoo will be vertically aligned).

A depressing thought is that maybe the reason NDS don't show us development of the game any more is because we give so much criticism of what they do show us. But I don't think we're being unfair in anything we say, and we (as long term System Shock fans) do have valid views, even if some of the changes that we disagree with might, in the long term, prove to actually enhance the remake.

And NDS is made up of adults, not pre-teen children, so they should certainly be able to handle (and even publically debate with us, the) criticisms we level at the remake.
