Played a little bit more. Oh my god, there is a literal ammunition vending machine in one of the storage closets. No, not a hacked replicator. An actual dedicated machine whose sole functional purpose is exchanging money for bullets.

This sort of thing was stupid in Bioshock, where it could barely be handwaved with "Well they're a bunch of insane libertarians", but HERE? On a corporate owned and operated space station? How in the everloving fuck do you even begin to justify the existence of these things? Does the security staff have to buy their own ammo? Does the Medical deck have a shooting range I don't know about?

Nameless VoiceInteresting and yeah I guess I do tend to forget those

Unrelated but I do wonder if the game is even coming out next month cause if it is then I guess it isn't that much longer, but tbh they hadn't even gave a release date yet so I am not holding my breath

If the beta is soon, then I wish I had backed a bit more all those years ago, but I wasn't sure if they'd be able to follow through with it or not and given how long it has been I guess I was right ot be wary, at least to a degree

Also unrelated, but I still wonder where this room is, somewhere on executive and I assume in gamma but idk

Also what kick says about the soundtrack here pains me

Oh it's "supposed to be a horror game", it's "jarring", well no it isn't and I can't believe he doesn't get why so many people love it and why it isn't a traditional horror game but action or action horror if anything

It has horror elements/parts, it isn't suppose to be SS2

Well, try not to be too outraged. I have seen every classic game franchise I ever loved absolutely butchered, turned into something beyond grotesque, featuring "gameplay" for the most mediocre of men, and all quality and identity gone. Every IP or concept that continued as a franchise suffered this same fate, generally speaking. And I love a fuckton of games. My beloved 90s PC and console games both. This game, while definitely far from perfect, actually seems to be turning out a bit better than most. I'm definitely not saying don't demand more from them, but keep expectations grounded in perspective. It could be far worse. They could make this game another Bioshock.

Sorry, I could not resist that one.

Yup, the game was not really horror, but a remake going in that direction is one obvious logical conclusion. It's not faithful to take that direction per-se, but it's also not idiotic or sacrilege either. You can argue that it could result in a better, more immersive experience, and that the original devs would wholly approve, and I wouldn't disagree.
Sure it's a shame the original very unique vibe would be gone/not felt in a modern context, but again, what they're doing in this regard makes inarguable rational sense. Horror is also one of the absolute best means to induce a state of immersion in my experience.

...it's hard to justify taking something unique and making something less unique out of it here. There's only one System Shock, but many horror games including its sequel. Just can't fight rationality though. It makes too much sense.

Wow, they actually consider "0451" both a mechanic and part of what makes an immersive sim separate from an RPG

There are no words.

True. Probably the only game series I have seen genuinely improve with new releases is Metro, and even then it's still plagued with vestigial issues from the original releases that bog it down.

They're being facetious.

I wouldn't put it past them to legitimately believe 0451 is a core part of imsim design

To be fair, with the direction the world is currently headed (corporate dystopian nightmare), sec employees having to buy their own ammo is somewhat believable. Say they have their standard issue handful of mags, and if they lose them or expend them in a wasteful manner (trigger happy/inaccurate), it's on them to cover the cost. ...but then it would be paid to and processed by the quarter master most likely, but video game logic applies. Still, Immersive Sims go out of their way to provide semi-believable explanation in most cases, so I hope they have something.
Should have just gone with replicators though.

I posted this in its own topic but I am so excited that I wanna put it here too

I figured out how to extract files from the Remake demo

1. Download the Unreal Engine (I used the most recent one (5.1) which seems to work but idk if it matters)

2. Open the command prompt

3. Go to the unreal files and find UnrealPak.exe (which is found at ...\Epic Games\UE_5.1\Engine\Binaries\Win64)

4. Drag and drop UnrealPak.exe to the command prompt and hit space

5. Go to the System Shock Remake Demo files and find SystemShock-Windows.pak (which is found at ....\System Shock Demo\SystemShock\Content\Paks)

6. Drag SystemShock-Windows.pak to the command prompt and hit space

7. Type: -Extract and then hit space

8. Create a folder to put the extracted files in and drag the folder to the command prompt

9. Hit enter (may take a couple hits) and then it will all be extracted to that folder

Here is a video that I followed:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AElxgCRXF64

I still need to view all of the stuff or figure out how to mod it, I tried to open the project folder but it said it needed C++ and the files are saved in an unreal file type so still working on looking at it but I wanted to share how to do it so others can do the same

Yeah to open that you'd need both the .uproject file, as well as the "Config", "Content" and "Source" folders. If those were grabble then Night Dive just mucked up bigtime, giving away their entire source code.

There is still stuff I am looking through in the files, and the music in in pieces and hadn't been able to view them yet (still working on that), making a google drive with the stuff I find and convert, might share it once it is more done

The demo file shas a lot of stuff not used in the demo but in the final game, some things are missing from the files such as certain items, enemies, weapons, music, etc but a lot seems to be here

In the meantime tho, here is some notable music from the pieces I have found and that also have some bits of the original. Hadn't been able to put all the pieces together to make a whole song but from what I have heard these are bits that stand out to me and also seemed to have some bits of the original, even if not as much as I'd like

I just want to know how to make gameplay mods.

Unlike a lot of people here, I feel the remake is salvagable

Yeah I wanna know how to make them to so we can mod the remake to fix it

Well if you had the project files, then stuff like level lighting and possibly music be quickly fixable. Mechanics though would need access to source code.

True, tho if the final game will be anything like the demo then it should be simple enough to mod in unreal

Hoping that the game's not going to be delayed yet again. Loved the beta demo, so can't wait to get my hands on the full game. SS1 has always been my second favorite game out of all Shock games, so this should be interesting.

If the demo is reflective of the full game, then the full game is still very much in a rough beta state, and they should delay as much as it takes to fix it.

I want it to be improve but tbh do I think they are gonna listen? no
I think they have made up their minds, and at this point I just want the game to be out so I can play it and be done with it, but delay after delay and I don't believe that it will come out next month as they said the backer beta would be by the end of February and that is in 4 days and March is next week and they have no release date or new trailers

Also maybe someone can help me, there is all this stuff in the demo files and I can only really view the sounds and see what else is there but I can't view the models directly cause it refuses to load in unreal and idk how to fix it

It depends how much source code etc access we can get.

System Shock 1 is far from a perfect game. Being able to seriously mod this to fix the bad parts, while keeping most of the SS1 gameplay intact and adding or fixing some of the weaker apsects of SS1 gives this potential to be better than the original.

I'm not a fool though and I know that would take a lot of work. I'm hoping it's possible to do
