TBH I think Prey can be harder than SS2 at times

Having been playing it for the past few days, 100% agree. A lot harder. Nice difficulty curve overall, as it never really gets super easy as new enemies are introduced as the game progresses.

Yeah suppose that may have been a bit patronising or something. My bad.
Not patronizing, just strangely clueless.

SS2 wouldn't have a reputation as a hard game if it wasn't a hard game. Being good at a hard game doesn't make the game not hard.

SS2's difficulty doesn't come from requiring twitchy reflexes, it comes from a requirement to learn the game. Learning the resource economy, which skills and weapons are most useful, how the AI works, how to most efficiently complete quests, etc. It becomes easy once you have that knowledge.

We must have not played the same game. There is a period were it's reasonably challenging, but it's no SS2, and its challenge drops off a cliff around half way through.

I'm only saying of what I have seen / experienced so far. I had played through the game twice, though that was a while back.

It looks like the forum mangled your URL. It should be:

Use of Public Image Ltd. is an obvious winner, not terribly sure about the hybrid of realspace/cyberspace format for the battle itself but at this rate anything would be an upgrade from the original I think.

Whenever I play SS2 I play with the intent of not dying.  The game gives you QBRMs and you can save/load but I don't like either of those.  To me it always felt like cheating.  You have 1 real life so that's the only one that should count.  In that sense, I still find the game challenging.  I haven't yet played it through on 1 life.  Mind you I do know all the exploits in the game but I don't use them.  I don't ammo farm or wrench and backpedal.  I don't enter key codes that I'm not supposed to know.  That sort of thing.  I wouldn't say the game is super hard.  There are other games that are wayyyy harder.  But I like the challenge posed by SS2 when you play it honestly, they way it ought to be played.

But yeah, as Sarge said, the difficulty curve falls off a cliff in the 2nd half of the game if you are relying mostly on weapons to win because there's a shitload of ammo.  Basically IF you're able to get past hydro playing honestly, you only did so BECAUSE you were disciplined and careful.  If you continue to exercise that sort of care till the end of the game, you will end up with a lot of ammo so that's the only thing I would really criticize.

I don't ... wrench and backpedal.
Uh, why not? Even the AIs do that.

I mean it's not really cheese but put yourself in the place of our hero.  Do you really want hostile enemies that took out an entire starship getting that close to you?  I always perceived the wrench as "random piece of blunt shit in lieu of proper weapon".  As soon as I get any sort of ranged weapon I'm going to favour it so I can keep my distance from the worms, not to mention the turrets that can shoot you from a mile away.

SS1 was more like this.  Nobody uses the pipe after they get the sparq or pistol and the laser rapier is very niche, basically for killing invisomutants.  In SS2, the melee weapons are more developed, with greater utility but I feel like that's because the RPG system allows you to mostly forego many of the weapons if you want to and then you need a means to dispatch different enemy types, whereas in SS1 it didn't matter that much.

Laser rapier niche? I thought everybody used it as the main weapon.

It's a decent weapon but it's still a melee weapon and very clearly the only one that kills inviso mutants.  Just try to kill them with anything else you'd have access to at the time and you'll see what I mean.  In SS1 it's too easy to die from enemies ambushing you around corners or respawning somewhere you're not looking for you to use a melee weapon.  You'd be dead 10 times over.

Wrench and then later crystal shard for me.

I can't even tell whether you people are talking about SS1 or SS2 now.

Perhaps the fault is mine for not being more explicit.  I consider SS1 just as legit of a topic as SS2 here but most members exclusively discuss SS2 and some haven't even played SS1.

because that's where the meat's at. literally. because there is a gigantic hunk of meat wrapped around the entire deal.

So, apparently instead of giving each backer a key, they give out a text file with thousands of Steam keys... then realised their error and revoked them all.

Oops?

Not sure how long it will take for them to sort this.

Luckily they sorted out quickly, it was a little bit chaotic having the entire doc of keys  8)

In any case, while I didn't play the latest demo, it looks like not much has changed between that and the backer beta.  I didn't play beyond Medical yet, so can't comment on the later parts of the game.

Things we've all said in the past still apply.
Pixelated textures look even worse than I remember, the art direction in general is still good apart from that. New logs mostly sound okay, though I dislike some of the plot changes (especially the new intro.)
Overall feels really quiet without music.

Combat doesn't feel very impactful, but after playing a lot of Darktide combat in most games is going to end up feeling awful.

This new updated backer beta comes with a request not to stream it "as not to spoil the game for others". So the other demo's didn't spoil it? I'm lost.

Definitely the best idea to let a rogue, vengeful AI control the ship you're stranded on.
