Topic: Best res for widescreen and keybind file? Read 2662 times

First of all this forum seems like a great place and I have been using the resources for SS2 tools and mods 'with great success' ([/borat] :P).
I have two noob questions, and first sorry if it has been asked before (I did try the search function) or if it's in the wrong forum.

1. What is the best resolution for a 16:10 widescreen monitor? Mine specifically has a native res of 1680*1050 and I have been playing around with the resolutions only to find that SS2 apparently only support 640*480, 800*600, 1024*768, 1280*1024 and 1600*1200. It's not that it even supports all 4:3 or 5:4 resolutions, no just those five specifically and no other.. right? My monitor can't display enough pixels for 1600*1200 so that is out of the question, which leads us to the next two resolutions down the line. You could say that 1024*768 having the 4:3 aspect ratio is closer the widescreen's 16:10 so the world would look less distorted - on the other hand 1280*1024 would detailed overall and have better depth but a 5:4 res would make the world look more distorted. The choice for me is down to these two right? What would you choose? I'm leaning more towards 1280*1024 though I can see that circular objects and circular 2D textures in the world certainly looks ellipsal.

2. Is there a cfg file or something that lets you set the keybindings in notepad? I would very much like this so I could make all the correct bindings before ever entering the game so I can keep a backup of a freshly installed, properly modded and totally un-used SS2 folder in store.

Thanks :)

You're right about the resolutions available. Can't really tell you what to choose though since I'm staring at a 4:3 monitor.
The file you are looking for is cam.cfg. So you would write this to the file:
Code: [Select]
game_screen_size 1280 1024Or change the appropriate line if it already exists.

You can change the keybinds in a good editor like Notepad++ or PSPad or Crimson Editor. Windows Notepad is not recommended as it destroys all the linebreaks in the file.
For more information see this thread. It's about a common keybind problem but it also explains how to change keybinds.

Ok thanks, it's awesome with quick answers!
I just thought of something easier though. Is there any way to make the game load up with the pre-defined "Standard FPS" bindings? Also is there any way to change the mouse sensitivity from outside the game? It's a bit high as per default.

Just another curiosity: there are two lines of "game_screen_size" in my cam.cfg, in other words the exact same line "game_screen_size 1280 1024" is present two times consecutively. All I did was to install a fresh copy of SS2, use the tool to patch it, make it mod-ready etc., then using the mod manager to install a bunch of quality improvement mods. I noticed that when I change the res ingame to, say 1024*768, the cam.cfg goes:

game_screen_size 1024 768
game_screen_size 1280 1024

- like it's only the top line that counts. Can I just delete one of them or does it need to have two?

You can delete one line.
SS2 will load the keybinds found in user2.bnd if I'm not mistaken. That file gets overwritten if you change keybinds, so you may want to make it read-only when you're finished.

Ok thanks.

I also just noticed that the looking glass studio sequence before coming into the main menu is gone, was it done in the official patch or something else?

It's a one time thing. It only plays on the first startup of the game.
Delete the "skip_intro" line from cam.cfg to get it back one more time.

I see. Thank you for the help.

Any possibility of 1440 x 900?

That'd be my favourite res too (MacBook Pro). Now I play on 1024x768 stretched, I never saw it on correct aspect ratio, so for me everything looks totally normal :)

I did the math for a lot of "creative" video resolutions heh, but the game specifically only supports 1280*1024 and 1600*1200 beyond 1024*768 which is a shame, but just the way it is. Now I'd definently recommend 1280*1024 as well for 16:10 users like me as I think higher res counts more than the marginally more distorted picture you get from a 5:4 resolution as opposed to 4:3 on a 16:10 monitor :)

Oh god, you're one of *those* people.

What's that supposed to mean? I'd really like to play it 4:3, but AFAIK that's not possible. Playin' in stretched mode is better than not playin' at all, isn't it?
