Why is it necessary to load a map? I went to File -> Open and loaded a shock2.gam and all the changes I made were there, but it didn't work, obviously. Just wondering why you couldn't just load the shock2.gam.

because bad thingsā„¢ will happen if you don't.

Fair enough.

I just tried it again. Nothing. I opened up the same earth.mis you did, changed Grub -182 to 50 HP for both HP settings, started a new game. Tried to summon a grub, didn't work. Got to the wrench part, killed a grub in one hit. I don't get it.

Opened up the same earth.mis, went to Grub -182, HP settings were set to 5.

ok, step by step;

-open the editor, load a map
-open the archetype (F3+grub), edit hp and maxhp
-file/save gamesys, save it as shock2.gam
-start a new game, go through the first levels (commands are disabled so you won't be able to spawn anything), and either spawn a grub (summon_obj grub) as soon as you enter medsci or let the game do it for you (a grub will conveniently spawn once you move a bit)

this works, I have just done it this way.

Followed it step by step. Still kill the first 2 grubs in one hit.

Running latest Secmod, DeepFriedBeer's sound mod, SHTUP and Rebirth, and most of, if not all, Vurt's mods. I'm supposed to save the shock2.gam into the Data folder, right?

no, you are supposed to overwrite the original found in the Secmod folder. data folder is for vanilla files and is not to be touched under any circumstances.

Aha! That was the problem! I couldn't find my shock2gam earlier until I found the one in the Data folder, so I thought I was supposed to overwrite that. Now it works.

New problem, though - there's no sound when I hit things with a wrench. Any ideas? Could it be a borked shock2gam?

yes. there is a good reason why I recommended the (very safe) edits via dml.

at this point, I would recommend starting over with a new, clean install of the game (some vanilla files have been overwritten, old editor was installed at one point leaving god knows what and where).
