Anyone else getting odd sound propagation? Talking about hearing hybrids even in the cryo area and where the med upgrade stations are before getting to the keycard door to get to the game proper.

Whenever one sounds it's almost as if the noise is right behind me no matter distance. Happens no matter sound settings or number of channels.

Sound behaves normally without the patch so I dunno.

try not using openal as your sound driver. also, no way SCP can make sound behave that way.

also, switching to dx6 tends to be slower on fully dx9 capable gpus, so don't do that unless you are positive you are gaining FPS, and not actually losing them.

I'm running SHTUP-ND and monitor displays are still low resolution (OSA/NAVY/Marine spinning logos, training room logos). Is SHEMP content still not included?

spinning logos are still lowres (we are aware, but there is no easy way of recreating those), but the training room signs should definitely be hires. double check your mod priorities, and maybe post a screenshot.

It would be good if Beta 2 is released in time for Christmas. It would be the perfect Christmas present for me!

I am so happy to see this ! I gave up on seeing this released one day, just checked recently by curiosity, I think I will wait it to be more polished since I don't have much time for games now, but it sounds and looks awesome, and finally support for 32bit lightmaps ! maybe SS2 will look great one day afterall :D

That day was several weeks ago.  :oldman:

also, the visual and functional difference between beta1 and beta2 will be negligible - it's mostly small bugfixing and fine tuning of inner workings, so there is not much sense in waiting really.

and with the recommended set of mods, the game will look pretty good, if I can say so myself.

Things have come a long way since '99.  It's incredible really, for a game that could run on a 200 MHz machine with 32 megs of RAM.

And despite the leaps in processing power and memory, very few modern titles have surpassed its depth of game mechanics.

Rather, we've regressed to: run down corridor, shoot everything that moves, YOU'RE WINNER.

People do that in System Shock 2 as well.

No they don't. You can't WINNER that way. It's literally impossible.
Re: Re: SS2 Community Patch (SCP) Beta 1

Bollocks to that.

I can't (I've tried) go back to any 3D game much older than SS2. That was a push. First game I ever played properly and loved was Deus Ex.

Duke Nukem 3D is one of the greatest shooters ever made. And I'm not old. Dat level design...and the PS1 soundtrack. Throw Duke Plus on top (with eduke32) and you're in virtual ass-kicking paradise.

The King indeed.

I'm assuming this egg/reference is implemented in a simulated manner, like the Westworld posters in the theater?

find it and you'll see for yourself. as mentioned before, the earth level is not that big.

I assume that to be a yes. Good.

I'll play the mod and provide a review or general feedback sometime, guaranteed.  Wasn't too long ago when I played Secmod so I'm on my afterShock cooldown period.

Just wondering what's being worked on, and how things are progressing towards the release of SCP Beta 2, if that's what you're calling it.

Re: Re: SS2 Community Patch (SCP) Beta 1

I wonder: Can the game be completed without the sympathetic resonator? If the player doesn't have hacking, an ICE pick (say they have all been used), or enough nanites, it possible to get into a situation where the game is uncompleteable? Is that something that should be fixed?

For the other shuttle, there will always be a wrench somewhere in the game you can backtrack to that you could use to destroy it, assuming it isn't flagged to only be vulnerable to bullets or something.

I believe you can also get permanently stuck facing the heart of the many and SHODAN if you run out of ammunition. That's bad, but probably less likely to happen and more likely to be fixed by loading a previous save. Also probably harder to fix.

Re: Re: SS2 Community Patch (SCP) Beta 1
674152ee54741
no, you need to get the device to progress, so it's either having hack 3 or using one ice pick. and yes, it is possible to get the game into an unwinnable state at that point, but you need to be really, really dumb - basically, not having the hack skill, any ice picks, and intentionally spending the modules that are given to you with the instructions on some other skill. such an edge case scenario does not need to be fixed (the "fix" would be to load an older save and use the modules to get the hacking skill).

a similar situation can happen at the very end of the game - in vanilla, the Shodanhead is invulnerable unless you hack the terminals, so if you can't for whatever reason (no skill, no ice picks, no nanites), you are screwed, but this has been fixed in SCP, and you can destroy her shields now with large amounts of damage.

She gives you cyber modules at that point? Sorry, I was unaware. I know "Polito" does when you need to research the biotoxin.

Re: Re: SS2 Community Patch (SCP) Beta 1
674152ee5494c
yes, same as with the research skill. it's basically the game telling you "dude, you really should have this skill at this point". and I actually agree with that, getting some research skill around hydro and hack 3 on command is pretty much mandatory - without those skills, your life will be quite a bit harder.
