Language is packed full of analogies for things that don't (or barely) exist anymore. We still refer to video "footage" (meaning literal feet of physical film) even when describing digital video. We still "hang up" on people... on our cell phones. Crazy people wear tin-foil hats instead of aluminum. And so on.

yes. but either way, chances are good that it's still around (and a threat) if it is mentioned in that context. if a cure existed that would make cancer a non-issue, he would probably refer to a different disease/condition, one that is still considered dangerous.

yes I know, and was almost sure you'd mention this. the thing is, plague can get you even nowadays, so while its ha-ha-I-kill-every-second-guy-I-touch days are over, it's still something that can be lethal.

any mention of the plague making a resurgence in an area is guaranteed to make people avoid that place like.. well, the plague. because they know that even today, one should not take it lightly.

Umm... the expression "the plague" originated with the Black Plague, which hasn't been a thing for over 600 years. That's the point, that things can persist in language as similes and metaphors for a looooooooooong time after they don't even exist anymore.

If someone snapped their fingers and got rid of cancer tomorrow, I'm pretty sure that "cancer" would still be used for at least a century or two to describe any undesired thing that grows uncontrollably.

yeah, probably. quite sure we could find a few examples where something deadly that ceased to be deadly pretty much disappeared from a language, but I think my desire to engage in a bit of unproductive discussion is now officially over.

it's a log, made by someone in the late nineties, his mindset is from that time period, and I used that and the potted plants for a little laugh. that's all.

I think we're missing the point.

Even if we had a total cure for cancer, where you could go to the doctor and get it fixed with 1 injection, as long as it's something that still happens (which it likely would since it seems to happen almost randomly as our cells become damaged over time), the description of "something growing uncontrollably inside your body" is still apt and saying something "grows like a cancer" is still a very apt description, cure or no cure.

We haven't had a rabbit plague in a very long time, but everyone still knows what you mean when you say something "breeds like rabbits"

Cancer is an inevitable consequence of aging, if you don't get it for some other reason (and last time I checked, some of these crewmembers are pretty fugly and old looking, xept Rebecca and Bloome... and maybe Bayliss).  You can't cure it except to "cut it out" (laser it whatever).  So cancer still exists and Diego's reference makes perfect sense.  The end.

there is no problem with Diego's log - it's just that I have made an assumption the geneticists of the System Shock universe didn't take a shot at cure for cancer (and mentioned the log that maybe suggests they indeed did not) and chose to make the potted plant indestructible instead (because the mad scientist mindset says making cures = not fun, creating monsters = fun), for the sake of being able to make a little joke.

I'm developing a growing appreciation for the Irrational mappers who made an effort to vary the floor texturing, vs the ones who just slapped the same tile down across the entire level.

Looking at more modern games (like say Soma and Prey), it's amazing how much effort they put into making the floors visually interesting. Like, even more so than floors in real life. So much scuffing and smudging and grating and trim.

How about adding nice water-reflections-on-wall (diffused reflection?) in those corridors?

This beautiful effect is much underused imo, it is iirc only seen in medsci2 & that swimming pool area in recovery deck so far.. It would add 100% more immersion / atmosphere to this place imo, very fitting i think...


and maybe add some water under those gratings? shouldn't there be water?

I'm more hoping we can get darkened maps again. The creepy purple lighting in hydro is atmospheric as fuck and it's lost in scp

I remember voodoo saying something in the past about trying to restore vanilla lighting in some of the maps. Was that ever done?

you can mtl the effects in.

the lighting has been tweaked iirc, but it will never be exactly the same as before the 16bit->32bit conversion. you'll manage I'm sure.
