Nice. What's the source of these pics anyway?

Unless I'm mistaken those pics are from Hydro and Rec, which other than missing lighting is pretty much the same in the final game itself.

System, considering the obsession I can see that you have with the alpha version of SS2. You'd never want to go near games that have gone through major gameplay and style choices mid development, or got cancelled but were otherwise feature complete.

Star Fox 2, Resident Evil 2, a snes version of Killer Instinct 2 and many others spring to mind there.

Resident Evil 2 had it's original version (90% done) scrapped, and the game was redone from scratch. Some fans managed to get their hands on a development disk (of that original version) and have been working on completing that into a fully done game for a few years now. If you looked into this one you'd have a mental breakdown.

Was the Resident Evil 2 remake/recovery (whatever it's called) ever released? The last I read about it was a couple of years back, when some people were complaining about how long it was taking.

They have a forum up here for it, and there is a YouTube channel for it.

There is also a website for it Here which has a demo up for it. I've not played it as I'd prefer to wait for the final version.

Work is on-going for the final version. Last I checked there had not been much word out on it. Be sure to check out the YouTube channel. That has some good videos up. That's available - Here

Is there an end goal to all of this?

I'd say it's the same as when he was trying to convince us that there is a secret on Rec1 and stuff behind that blocked off Ops4 door.

He seems pretty good at finding old beta pics at least, even if the reconstructions are rarely great

there is exactly one secret on rec 1 that i have found, extremely epic and useful for future generations

if you do the invincibility glitch and stay in the dead man walking state, go to recreation via the elevator.  create a relocation marker.  mantle on it, crouch down as you relocate, then up then down, yadda yadda, you're out of bounds.

then go to crew quarters.  but when you do so, make sure to round the corner super tightly.  you will be screen tilt walking.  take a speed hypo.  do that shit for about 6 or 7 seconds, then create a relocation marker and immediately relocate to it.

you will be completely out of bounds,  but you will see the ultimate secret from this vantage point...

a small pale cube, far out of bounds.  i have never been inside it but i have seen it.  it wastes so much time during speedruns that i just round the corner really wide and don't speed hypo on rec.

Gaze Upon The Cube
There is a cube in every level. Enemies and stuff gets created/spawned in there and parked. If they are needed they will get relocated to the desired position  on the map.

Even the fan FM's (mine included) do the "secret cube" stuff, as that's how SS2 dark engine stuff is done.

Hell even other games do it. I used that trick in Shadowrun Returns for my UGC to spawn actors that the player would not see, but be contacted by. And SR is a completely different sort of game besides the RPG side of things.

It's called a "blue room" in DromEd parlance. No, I don't know why.

But as implied above, the technique is used in pretty much any 3D game engine. Probably even some 2D ones. Creating special entities at author time, then teleporting them in when needed, tends to be much easier than creating them while the game is running. So you park them somewhere completely inaccessible in the level.

It may only last a half hour, but it's a half hour in a space museum well spent.
